Cannabis issues in the state have been temporarily stalled due to the current climate of legal and political uncertainty. Recreational use advocates want the state Legislature to take up the issue, but it could be until 2028 before there is any movement to put the issue back on the state ballot. Now, continuing to advance that cause, a new study from researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus finds that cannabis use in middle-aged and older adults is associated with increased regional brain volume and enhanced cognitive abilities in areas associated with memory, processing speed, and executive function.…
Jim Kallinger, Chairman of the Small Business and Consumers Union Have you ever considered that many of today’s lawsuits are funded by third-party investors? This is a practice that most people are unaware of, but one that is rapidly becoming a dominant force in our nation’s litigation. For many years, the initial costs of litigation have been borne by law firms themselves, who typically work with high contingency fees that represent perhaps 40% of the likelihood of a verdict or settlement. By charging themselves such high fees, companies are risking their own funds to prepare for fact-finding, trials, and negotiations.…
It has been fashionable in America for some time to ignore the reality of evil in the world. When evil strikes, our cultural choice has been to protest loudly, wring our hands together, and then move on to the next horrifying news story. Are we lazy? Are we suffering from short-term memory damage? Do we lack the ability to take the time to gather evidence, develop a response strategy, or the will to say, “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore?” There was a time when our collective anger exploded over an American being harmed…
Florida is unparalleled in its concentration of pristine, shimmering, azure-blue freshwater springs, tallying more than 1,000 such examples throughout the state. These natural gems give a glimpse into the Floridan aquifer, a system of porous limestone that forms underground caves and rivers, pushing water up through vents and ultimately flowing into the faucets of millions of Sunshine State residents. These springs were the same sources of awe, wonder and intrigue that sustained Native Americans, animals and ecosystems alike for centuries before modern-day humans got their hands on the state’s treasured resources and soiled them, like the 20 lost springs of…
Q: My cardboard palm turned brown after it froze. Will it grow again, and how much pruning will it need? A: Most of the so-called cardboard palms look pretty disappointing at the moment. In fact, these are not palm trees, but cycads, which are most often referred to as cardboard plants. The name comes from the fact that the leaves resemble cardboard. Look at the base of the plant and inside the crown of brown leaves. Some of them are probably green, which indicates that there is a lot of life in these plants. Now is a good time to…
“This is a strange year,” Tkachuk said. “I’m not trying to make excuses, but we all know one of the biggest reasons we’re in the situation we’re in, even though we’ve lost every single one of our man-to-man matches. … I promise I’ll get back there at some point.” they said it “It’s more fun to win than lose. I want to carry on that tradition.” – Eetu Luostarinen talks after a victorious road trip “There was noise outside. That was it. It always affects you because you have a wife, kids and stuff, but I’m not surprised at all…
Florida’s colder-than-usual winter is creating challenges for homeowners’ lawns and gardening teams at central Florida theme parks. At Walt Disney World, that meant covering elaborate topiary with frost cloth overnight. At Legoland Florida, heaters have been installed around the base of the park’s famous banyan tree, a natural staple since the days of Cypress Gardens. “We did a lot to help with the preparations, and we were able to save a lot by covering the tender bedding plants and some of the more valuable plants with frostcloth to protect them,” said Michelle Cherkys, Walt Disney World Horticulture Manager. Disney maintained…
A plaque has been placed on the downtown Orlando building where Walt Disney made history with his 1965 announcement that included plans to develop Central Florida. Those strolling around Lake Eola can take a short detour to see a sign marking the date when Disney’s Florida Project (later known as Walt Disney World) was unveiled. “The Disney brothers didn’t just announce a theme park, they announced a partnership with our community who is ready to dream bigger for the future,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said during a brief ceremony Thursday night. “And there’s no denying that that partnership forever changed…
A Black Tap Crazy Shakes pop-up is now open at Disney Springs. Super fans turned out in droves (some in matching costumes!) to be the first to taste these handcrafted Black Tap dishes at the most magical place on Earth. The event will run for 90 days until the end of May. Operating in the space that previously housed Sprinkles Bakery, this is the space’s second pop-up after a successful holiday season with Everglazed Donuts & Cold Brew. It is located in the Town Center area of the complex, near Frontera Cocina, at the foot of the bridge that connects…
A Florida man who had previously pleaded guilty to charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol was sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing two middle school students. Andrew Paul Johnson, 45, was found guilty Thursday of five criminal charges, including sexual abuse, lewd and lascivious display and transmitting material harmful to a minor. Following the verdict, a Florida court sentenced him to life in prison. Prosecutors said Johnson abused an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl over an extended period of time, using his role as a…
