As Florida prepares for a special legislative session in the coming weeks, families like mine are watching with deep concern. Lawmakers are now being asked to reconsider a proposal to expand non-medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements. For families like ours, this discussion is not abstract or political. It’s very personal and can be life-threatening. My young son, Remy, is a leukemia survivor. Diagnosed when she was 2 years old, chemotherapy weakened her immune system, so everyday infections can quickly become severe. Community immunity is more than just a public health concept for our family. This protection allows our children…
At Mills 50 dba, the Dirty Martini is the most popular cocktail on the menu, beating out both the Margarita in a close second place and the Old Fashioned in a distant third place. The bartenders, brothers Leo and Zach Reese, were initially surprised by this, as neither of them liked the drink. “Just to see how people lose their minds over blue cheese olives,” Zach laughs. Even more important than these, but probably the best seller, is homemade brine. Leo Rees shows off his homemade brines at dba at Mills 50 Bar. Florida Rep. Sheila Chafferas McCormick announced her resignation Tuesday, resigning from the U.S. House of Representatives just ahead of a scheduled ethics hearing that could lead to her ouster. The South Florida Democrat has been under intense scrutiny for months, with the House Ethics Committee previously finding she had committed more than 20 violations of federal law and Congressional rules. The Florida Daily reported that the findings included widespread campaign finance violations and failure to properly disclose donations related to the 2022 campaign. These ethical findings were tied to a broader federal criminal case. Prosecutors allege that Charfilas-McCormick orchestrated a…
Florida could temporarily lose its vote in the U.S. House of Representatives following a dramatic move by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) to expel Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.). The resolution, introduced this week, targets Mills, who represents Florida’s 7th Congressional District, raising the possibility that Florida will lose representation, at least temporarily, if the effort gains traction in Washington. Mr. Mace’s filing outlines a series of allegations against Mr. Mills, including allegations related to personal conduct and financial matters, and follows an earlier failed attempt to formally censure Mr. Mills. Mills has denied any wrongdoing, pointing to the current review by…

A new study by AARP shows that fraud is widespread and a growing concern. Nearly four in 10 U.S. adults, or about 103 million people, have already experienced fraud, and an estimated 159 million people fear they will become a victim. Just under a third of adults (30%) say their biggest fear is being targeted themselves, followed by losing money with no way to get it back (21%) and seeing a loved one sacrificed (15%). These concerns highlight both the economic and psychological toll of these crimes and reflect how pervasive and personal the threat has become. The report also…
