“The Pitt” closes “retirement” for the best drama of a rushed night filled with night – Orlando Sentinel

LOS ANGELES – Freshman drama “The Pitt,” the hourly, hourly exterior in Pittsburgh’s emergency room, won the best drama at the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday night.

Medical dramas entered the night as candidates for Dark Horse, with many winning the category predicting Apple TV+’s “retirement.” “The Pitt” defeated “The Last of Us” (HBO), “The White Lotus” (HBO), “Andor” (Disney+), “The Diplomat” (Netflix) and “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+).

Series creator R. Scott Gemmill dedicated his victory to healthcare and frontline workers and first responders.

“Respect, protect them, trust them,” he said in his acceptance speech.

The first season of the drama unfolded over 15 fascinating episodes tracking 15-hour tough shifts in the emergency room to present a realistic portrayal of the challenges healthcare workers face. Star and executive producer Noah Weil returned to Scrub 15 years after the end of “ER” and starred as Dr. John Carter in NBC’s longtime medical drama and reunited with showrunner “ER” producers John Wells and Gemmill.

The series made headlines even before the premiere, even when the estate of “ER” creator Michael Criton sued Warner Bros., producer of “Pitt” and alleged it was a illicit reboot of an NBC medical drama. In response, Warner Bros. said that “pits” were not “derivative work” of “er.” The case is still pending.

The debut season of “The Pitt’s” ended with a total of five victories, including actors in Weil’s drama and actors supporting actresses in Katherine Lanatha’s drama.

“The Pitt” will return to its second season in January 2026.
