“We’ve asked him a lot,” head coach Paul Maurice said of Randle, who has been given a larger role this season with captain Aleksander Barkov out with an injury. “One of the things he’s learning is the crazy level of fatigue that happens on the first hole when you’re on the power play or penalty kill. It’s good to see him score again. That might be what comes out of him. I believe he can put the puck in the net. We believe the offense is there.”
Putting the Devils back on top in the second period, Dougie Hamilton grabbed a bounce on the boards after a missed shot by Jack Hughes and sent the puck into the cage to make it 2-1 at 1:35. Cody Glass then made a chip shot to extend New Jersey’s lead to 3-1 at 8:13.
In the third period, the Devils shut the door.
Dawson Mercer and Simon Nemec each had empty-net goals, holding the Panthers to just two shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, sealing the Devils’ 5-1 victory.
Bobrovsky made 28 saves for Florida and Markstrom stopped 20 of 21 shots.
Bobrovsky made eight dangerous saves to keep the Panthers in contention.
“It was a tough game tonight,” Maurice said. “Sergei was good. Our goaltending was good. We were behind in the game. We were struggling to generate, so we tried different methods that weren’t very effective.”
