Walmart recalls 850,000 water bottles after losing their lids and losing their eyesight

NEW YORK (AP) – Walmart is recalling around 850,000 stainless steel water bottles as the lids can “force eject” and attack consumers unexpectedly.

The recall covers Walmart’s “Ozaru Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle.” These have been sold in chain stores nationwide since 2017. According to a notice released Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these products pose “serious effects and risk of laceration.”

This is because the lid is forced to drain when consumers try to open the bottle “after food, soda, or perishable drinks such as juice or milk are stored inside over time.”

As of Thursday’s announcement, Walmart had received three reports of consumers injured after being hit in the face with these lids as they opened the bottle. And two of them “suffered permanent vision loss after being hit by the eyes,” the CPSC added.

Consumers are urged to stop using the currently recalled Ozaru Trail bottles and should contact Walmart for a full refund. Shoppers can also bring their products to their local Walmart stores for compensation.

The bottle being recalled can also be identified by model number 83-662. This does not appear on the product itself, but it does appear on the package. The stainless steel base is silver and the lid is a black one-piece screw cap. There is also an Ozarus Trail logo embedded on the side of the 64 oz bottle.

The Associated Press contacted Walmart on Friday for further comment.
