Opinion poll finds voters are losing faith in American institutions

A recent NBC News poll looked at which government and American institutions most voters do or do not trust.

The poll found that only 36% of Americans have confidence in universities.

Fifty-two percent of Democrats had “a great deal” or “a lot” of confidence in universities. Only 17% of Republican voters trust universities.

When it comes to the U.S. military, 86% of Republicans trust the U.S. military, while most Democrats (58%) say they are “not very proud,” “not at all proud,” or have “little or no confidence” in the U.S. military.

52% had no confidence in the current federal government.

About other institutions:

64% of voters have little or no trust in national media. 56% of all voters have no confidence in Congress at all. 43% of voters view religious groups negatively.

There was about 40% distrust in the Supreme Court. That number has steadily increased among Democrats.

“Over the last 20 years, these numbers are 20 to 30 points higher than they used to be. Trust is just getting worse. We might see a little bit of a partisan divide on these as well. Republicans are much more distrustful of the media, and Democrats are much more negative about the Supreme Court,” said NBC media analyst Steve Kornacki.

Regarding America’s future, most voters felt that its best days were behind it.

Almost 60% said the best was “over” and 38% said the country’s best was yet to come.

While 90% of Republican voters said they were “very or extremely” proud to be an American, only 29% of Democrats felt the same way.
