Consumer Energy Alliance praises the Florida Legislature for supporting our utility workforce

Florida lawmakers are standing up to protect those who maintain our lights during hurricanes and other natural disasters by recognizing them as fellow firefighters and other first responders, such as EMS. The new law will strengthen penalties for assault on utility workers who are regaining power after a storm or working on critical infrastructure. We would like to thank Senator Clay Yarborough and Senator Jennifer Kincart Jonsson for the leadership.

Utility workers are genuine first responders and work with emergency services to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities. They prioritize important facilities such as hospitals and emergency response centres and help start community recovery. They will help our area begin the recovery and reconstruction process. In particular, by prioritizing important facilities such as hospitals, emergency response centers and essential infrastructure.

Coordination with Florida utilities, state authorities and local governments shows how things work. In many cases, it is difficult to understand the scale and speed of these emergency response efforts.

We thank all utility workers who are taking part in a monumental effort to help the nation recover after the hurricane, beyond our daily work to maintain and upgrade our powerful electric grid. America needs more solidarity, service and resilience like this, especially during times of crisis. The law passed by the Capitol is that elected leaders in Florida know and recognize the work you are doing in our state.

The Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) is the leading voice of smart energy and environmental policy for consumers, bringing together families, farmers, small businesses, distributors, producers and manufacturers to support America’s environmentally sustainable energy future. CEA works every day and encourages communities across the country to seek smart, realistic, and environmentally responsible solutions to meet our country’s energy needs. Supporting our energy workforce will go a long way to ensure that the lights remain on.

Kevin Doyle is Florida Executive Director and Vice President of the Consumer Energy Alliance.
