This week, the Florida Department of Business and Specialist Regulation (DBPR) announced decisive action against unlicensed contractors targeting Floridians through two active enforcement operations in Lee and Monroe County. These businesses were carried out in collaboration with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Monroe County Building Office, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the targeted bad actors trying to exploit vulnerable homeowners through unauthorized contract fraud.
“Florida is a legal and order hub under Governor DeSantis, and under his leadership, DBPR continues to work with state and local law enforcement partners to hold bad actors accountable,” said DBPR Executive Director Melanie S. Griffin. “These targeted efforts protect Floridians and business owners alike from the risks and negative long-term impacts of unauthorized activities and we look forward to maintaining momentum.”
Lee County Operation
From January 28th to 29th, DBPR conducted a two-day undercover investigation in Lee County. This has been recently affected by Hurricanes Helen and Milton. Following the emergency situation, unlicensed contracts targeting Floridians affected by the storm are a felony. The surgery caused nine people to be charged with contracts that earned their licenses and emergency violations of felony.
Monroe County Operated
On February 6-7, DBPR investigators partnered with Monroe County law enforcement agencies to identify and arrest unlicensed contractors. This operation resulted in eight quotes of unauthorized contracts and electrical work.
All cases have been referred to the State Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement agencies for further action.
