Shakira’s Orlando Concert elicits complaints about noise levels

“This Shakira concert at Camp World Stadium sounds like she’s playing in my driveway,” WKMG-TV News 6 anchor Justin Warmas wrote Wednesday night. “I live three miles away and rattle my windows. How are you okay?”

The TV journalist reported that he was one of dozens of Orlando residents living in College Park, hearing Shakira’s concerts beyond that, and feeling like he was rocking his home from miles away.

“This was the first time I’d heard a concert from my house, even when EDC was in town,” Warmoth commented on his post. “I was almost annoyed because when I woke up at 2:30am, this shift gave Karen’s tendency.”

Other central Floridians commented in the post saying they could hear Camp World Stadium concerts, which have around 45,000 fan homes from Alta Monte Springs, Thornton Park, Maitland and Audubon Park.

I drew more than 130 comments with people reporting that they’ve heard the show from afar, from Orlando Subreddit’s reddit thread Longwood and Apopka, entitled “Is Shakira’s Concerts Loud?”

“32804 has strict orders to turn on all listening ears and adjust only to the exclusive Shakira live stream in Orange County tonight,” one user commented, asking for a reply from the original poster:

Other Redditors speculated that the sound was moving or louder due to the lower humidity levels, wind and cloud ceilings.

Orlando Mayor Robert Stuart, who represents the College Parks within district three districts, said he received no more complaints than other outdoor concerts. He said Orlando’s Downtown Entertainment Zone, which includes Camp World Stadium, can hold live music until 11pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends.

“There’s a lot of bass in modern music,” he said. “If you place the bass speaker on the ground, it sends reverberations that can impact four or five miles. That’s why you can rattle Windows.”

Stuart said the city wants to be sensitive to residents in the area near Orlando’s concert venues, but it won’t stop live entertainers from playing beautifully.

“For us, it’s another concert. We’re sensitive to it and we’re trying to make sure people finish early, especially on weekday nights,” he said. “If there are clouds above you, the sound moves further. I want to respond appropriately, but I never stop playing the concert.”

A resident of Spring Lake Manor, just west of College Park, said this was the biggest concert they’ve ever heard.

“I’ve always listened to concerts. I’ve seen the Rolling Stones, Chilean Pepper and Paul McCartney in that stadium. Shakira was the biggest concert ever,” reads the comment. “I like her, but the city needs to tweak her. She broke all noise ordinances last night. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for seven years and I’ve never heard anything out of that loud voice from that stadium.”

Julie Copeland, who lives in Ivan Hoe village across from her garden apartment, said she can hear a concert standing outside the house and feel the bass inside the house.

Posting to Nextdoor from Orlando City’s Neighborhood Resource Specialist Jennifer Chapin has warned that the event will include Pyro and a ton of audio. Approximate end times were listed as 11pm. The concert actually ended just after 10:45pm

College Park resident Bob Butterfield emailed the Orlando Sentinel and said this was the clearest thing he’d ever heard of a concert from Camp World Stadium.

“I’ve heard a lot of concerts coming from Camp World Stadium, but I realized that listening to music is the most obvious thing last night. “Last night was the best I’ve heard. Also, climatic conditions can be a factor that affects sound quality. I should probably complain, but I’m just accepting the situation as I do now.”
