Sunrise, Fla. — The National Hockey League today announced the goaltenders selected for the NHL Quarter Century Team, selected from all players who played from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2024. He voted for fans as part of a team of 25 and joined Mark Andre Fleury, Martin Brodur, Patrick Roy, Carrie Price and Henrik Lund Qvist.
In the first quarter of the 21st century, Luongo was placed at or near the top of the league with multiple goaltending statistics.
His 1,035-man career regular-season game and 486 wins were second for the goaltender in that range behind Mark Andre Fleury (1,036 appearances, 567 wins). Luongo’s 28,114 saves were 1,274 more than the next cross netminder (Fleury, 26,840). He led all goaltenders and played with a save percentage of 0.919 in at least 600 games. His 0.928 was tied to get the best mark between Thomas Fokorn and goaltenders, where at least 600 games were played, with a proportion at uniform strength (21,999 saves on 23,715 shot attempts). His 76 shutout ranked behind Martin Brodur (87) in the league lead.
Highlights of Luongo’s career include six NHL All-Star Game appearances (2003-04, 2014-2015 and 2015-16 and Florida, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 Vancouver), as well as Vezina Trophy finalists (2003-04, 2006-07 and 2010-10-10-10-10-10-10-04) (2006-07) and Billmasterton Trophy (2017-18).
Montreal, Quebec, owns the best Panthers franchise goaltending record of all time to play (572), win (230), shutout (38), save (16,086), assists/points (13), goaltender (75, 2005-06), singleseason save (2,303) (2,303), and saves singleseasons (16,086), assists/points (13). Luongo’s 2,303 saves in the 2006-07 campaign was an expanded record since 1967 on most saves in a season, scoring a .931 save percentage and 2.43 goals against that year’s average in Florida.
On the international stage, Luongo is an Olympic gold medalist and helps Team Canada win gold medals in 2010 and 2014. During his Canadian career at the IIHF World Championships, Luongo won gold in the 2003 and 2004 tournaments and in his hometown at the 2004 Hockey World Cup.
Luongo’s No. 1 is the only player number that the Panthers have retired.
