US Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody from Florida have announced the reintroduction of the Mikcoski Reservations Regional Amendment Act, which will designate the Osceola Camp in Mikcoski National Park as part of the Mikcoskie Reservation. The law will help optimize water flow to Everglades National Park while taking steps to protect Osceola Camp from flood risk. Rep. Carlos Guimenez leads the law in the House of Representatives.

This law is supported by the Miccosukee tribe.

“The Mikcauchy Osceola Camp is a hub of cultural importance for generations of tribe members and we are proud to be able to introduce the bill to Sen. Ashley Moody and his colleagues to ensure its protection,” Scott said in an official statement. “As governor of Florida, I am deeply grateful for my partnership with the Mikkoski tribe, and as a US Senator, I will continue to support their interests.”

Sen. Ashley Moody said, “As a fifth generation Florida, protecting the natural beauty of the state is one of my top priorities. The law will make great strides to ensure that members of the Mikkoski tribe who call the Everglades home while achieving the benefits of restoring the Everglades.”

Rep. Carlos Guimenez, a Republican from the affected district, led the push for the US House version of the bill, praised Moody and Scott for their efforts.

“As a representative of the Mikkoski tribe, I have seen first hand the tribe’s dedication to being an outstanding steward of the Everglades. “I want to continue working with the tribes to protect the precious river of grass and integrate the Osceola camp into the Mikkoski reserve area.”
