US-China trade talks in London enter day 2

LONDON (AP) – The US and China held second day talks in London on Tuesday aimed at mitigating trade disputes after President Donald Trump said it was “not easy,” but the US is “doing well” in negotiations.

The Chinese delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister met several hours on Monday at Lancaster House, a gorgeous 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace, with hours of Monday meeting Treasury Secretary Howard Latnik, Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent, and trade representative Jamieson Greer.

China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and trade negotiator Li Chenggang are also on the Beijing delegation.

When Lutnick arrived Tuesday morning, he said the talks were “going well” and he hoped they would last all day.

Trump asked reporters how negotiations were progressing late Monday. “We’re doing well with China. China is not easy,” he said.

The two sides are trying to build negotiations in Geneva last month. This agreed to a 90-day suspension of most 100% or more tariffs imposed on each other in the escalating trade war that caused the fear of the recession.

Since Geneva spoke, the US and China have exchanged angry words about visas for Chinese students at American universities, artificial intelligence for rare earth minerals essential to automakers and other industries, and advanced semiconductors that drive visa visas.

Trump spoke at length last Thursday as Chinese leader Xi tried to get back on track on the phone. The following day, Trump announced on social media that trade talks would resume in London.

China, the world’s largest producer of rare earths, has shown that it could ease export restrictions imposed on its elements in April, relying on automakers around the world. Beijing hopes that the US will lift restrictions on China’s access to the technology used to make advanced semiconductors.

Trump said he wants to “open China,” the world’s dominant manufacturer.

“If we don’t open China, we might not do anything,” Trump said in the White House. “But we want to open China.”

Associated Press writer Josh Balk from Washington contributed to the story.
