HUD Executive Director Scott Turner and Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem have launched a joint effort to curb alleged exploitation of U.S. housing programs.
The Trump administration announced Monday that it would end taxpayer-funded housing for illegal immigration.
Together, Turner and Noem signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) titled “American Housing Program for American Citizens.”
American citizens have been gaining back seats for illegal immigrants for too long, Turner said. Turner said American taxes should be used to benefit only US citizens.
As part of the new memorandum, HUD will provide full-time staff members to help operate at the Incident Command Center (ICC) to promote data sharing and to ensure taxpayer-funded housing programs are not used to benefit or contain illegal immigrants.
Noem accused the Biden administration of failing to prioritize Americans.
“This memorandum will be a partnership formed to ensure that these housing programs go only to those who deserve it, those who need help, and those who want a better life for their families,” Noem said in the video.
The HUD and DHS partnership comes after Trump signed an executive order in February to oversee federal agencies and departments to identify and take corrective action all federal funded programs that provide financial benefits to illegal immigrants.
The department pointed to a variety of other issues surrounding taxpayer-funded housing programs for illegal immigration.
“There are around 9 million public and subsidized housing across the country without proper information sharing and eligibility status determinations,” the department said.
