NEW YORK (AP) – More than 1.15 million power banks have been recalled across the US after fires and explosions have been reported by consumers.
Electronics manufacturer Anker Innovations recalls a particular “Powercore 10000” power bank, according to a notice Thursday from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is because the internal lithium-ion battery can overheat.
Overheating batteries can lead to “the risk of melting plastic components, smoke, and fire.” The company added that it is making the recall “from a wealth of care to ensure customer safety.”
According to the CPSC, China-based Anker has received 19 reports of fires and explosions, including these currently envisioned portable chargers. This includes 11 reports of two minor injuries and property damage in excess of $60,700.
The recalled “PowerCore 10000” power bank model number is A1263. According to the recall notice, it was sold online on the Anker website and Amazon, eBay and Newegg for around $27 in the US from June 2016 to December 2022.
These currently assumed chargers will promptly be urged to stop using them immediately. And contact Anker for a free exchange.
Affected consumers can sign up for the recall by visiting the Anker website for more information. To receive a replacement, consumers must submit a photo of the recalled power bank that shows the model number, serial number, name, date and the word “recall” written on the product.
Note that both CPSC and Anker should not throw these power banks directly into garbage or general recycle streams. Because of the risk of fire, lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently from other batteries, so it is important to check local guidance.
