Musk asks X users about the end of daylight saving time

Most mask respondents say they prefer “an hour later.” The clock will move forward on Sunday.

Elon Musk has rekindled debates on daylight savings as most of the country is set to “Spring Forward” this weekend.

On Wednesday night, Musk conducted a poll on social media platform X to gain insight into how Americans feel about time change.

“If the change in daylight savings time is cancelled, then one hour before (or) after (or) Musk asked his followers in the poll that ended Thursday afternoon.

Over 1.3 million X users joined Musk’s Survey. A poll that ended Thursday afternoon showed that 58.1% voted “an hour later, 41.9% voted “an hour ago.”

The clock is expected to move forward one hour before 2am on Sunday, March 9th. Americans lose an hour of sleep, but can enjoy the sun late in the evening until the clock “falls” for an hour until November at least.

President Donald Trump has long vowed to finish two rituals a year.

Trump is seeking an end to daylight saving time
“The Republicans use their best efforts to eliminate daylight saving time. This has small but powerful constituencies, but not to! Daylight saving time is inconvenient and very expensive for our country,” Trump wrote in his December 2024 Social Post of Truth.
In a March 2019 post, during his first term, Trump wrote:

Currently, only most of Hawaii and Arizona are not taking part in the practice.

Past efforts in Congress to end Daylight Savings Time have stagnated. A bipartisan bill called the Sunshine Protection Act would have eliminated time changes twice a year.

The Senate passed the bill in 2022, but failed in the House.

Earlier this year, Republican Sen. Rick Scott, of Florida, reintroduced it.

“I always hear from Americans that they’re tired of changing their watches twice a year. It’s an unnecessary decades-old habit and it’s more of annoyed to their families than profits,” Scott said in a January 8 press release. “I’m excited to have President Trump return to the White House and be on board fully to lock the watch, so that he can pass this good bill and make this common sense change that simplifies and benefits American families.”

Experts say that a loss of an hour of sleep leads to more car accidents, heart attacks and moodiness. On the other side of the discussion, it has been suggested that saving daylight savings could reduce crime and traffic accidents.
More than half of Americans surveyed in Gallup polls hope to end the change twice a year. A January 2025 poll shows that 54% of Americans are ready to abolish practice. Meanwhile, 40% of Americans support daylight saving time, while 6% are uncertain.
