Maryland Senator travels to El Salvador Visits a man who was accidentally deported

Senator Chris Van Hollen had previously requested a meeting with President Salvador Naive Buquere during his leader’s visit to Washington.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Tuesday he will travel to El Salvador on April 16 to visit Kilmer Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant who is being detained in his home country after being mistakenly deported by US federal authorities.

In a statement, Van Hollen said he hopes to visit Abrego Garcia and “check his happiness” but also seeks “constructive conversations with government officials” about his release.

Van Hollen said the US federal court ordered to promote a safe return to the United States.

“Ensuring his safe release should be a priority for the US government, so tomorrow I am traveling to El Salvador,” he said. “We must continue working urgently to get Kilmer back to Maryland safely.”
The senator previously called for a meeting with President Salvador Naive Buquere during his leader’s visit to Washington, saying that if Abrego Garcia is not returned by the middle of the week, he will go to El Salvador.

In an emailed statement to the Epoch Times, White House Communications Director Stephen Chen said Van Hollen had expressed “more concern and sympathy” for suspected MS-13 gangs than victims of “terrifying immigration crimes.”

Other Democrats, such as Robert Garcia (D-Calif) and Maxwell Frost (D-fla.), have sought approval for Abrego Garcia to send an official delegation to the El Salvador terrorist confinement center, currently being held by Salvadran authorities.

Garcia and Frost have written to the chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee James Comer (R-KY.) On April 15, he called for a delegation of Congress to conduct welfare checks on Abrego Garcia and other illegal immigrants detained in the largest security prison.
They said Congressional oversight is “guaranteed” in light of President Donald Trump’s recent remarks.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a statement on April 14th, in his call for return to the country, stating that it will “set the record straight” on Abrego Garcia’s detention in El Salvador.

“I think this illegal alien is the very place he belongs to, in El Salvador,” said DHS Deputy Commissioner Tricia McLaughlin. “He was illegal in our country, he was from El Salvador, born in El Salvador and the media forgot to mention it. He is a member of the MS-13 gang.”

Abrego Garcia illegally entered the United States in 2011. He was arrested last month and deported to El Salvador for allegedly being a member of the MS-13 gang, a US-designated terrorist organization.

The immigration judge withheld him the removal in 2019, preventing his return to El Salvador over concerns about his safety due to gang violence in his country. The Trump administration said Abrego Garcia was deported due to administrative errors.
In a court filing Monday, DHS’s acting advisor Joseph Mazzarra said the department “does not have the authority to forcefully extract foreigners from the domestic custody of foreign sovereign states.”

Mazzara also said Abrego Garcia is no longer subject to withholding for removal, as MS-13 is considered a foreign terrorist organization, and even if he can return to the US, DHS will expel him again to El Salvador or other countries.

Mazzarra also cited Buquere’s recent remarks at the White House, where El Salvador said he would not return Abrego Garcia to the United States.

“I hope I’m not proposing to smuggle terrorists into the United States,” Bukel told reporters. “How can I get him back to the US? … Of course I’m not going to do that.”

US District Judge Paula Sinis ordered a two-week rapid discovery on April 15, including the demand for government officials’ depositions and documents, determining whether the Trump administration acted to comply with her orders to promote men’s return to the United States.

Sam Dorman contributed to this report.
