NEW YORK – Ju judges began Tuesday with Harvey Weinstein’s new trial on charges of rape and sexual assault in Manhattan.
Weinstein, 73, faces a count of one rape and two criminal sexual conduct at the ju trial, and will be presided over by Superior Court Judge Curtis Farber. Weinstein, who co-founded Miramax Studios and once one of Hollywood’s most influential producers, pleaded not guilty and denied that everyone had attacks and unconsensual sexuality.
Weinstein, who has experienced a variety of health issues, was brought to court in a wheelchair. He dressed in a blue tie and a blue suit and spoke to his legal team and smiled.
The exam is expected to last about six weeks. Faber and his lawyers on both sides question and choose 12 ju apprentices from a pool of Manhattan residents. The verdict must be unanimous to convince the verdict.
The first day of the selection of ju appraisers will end due to no selection and will continue on Wednesday.
Ju judges discovered Weinstein was found guilty of rape and sexual assault in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison. The state’s court of appeals found that the woman who convicted Weinstein in April 2024, ordered a new trial and blamed Weinstein for some of the attacks that were not part of the charges against him should not be allowed to testify.
Prosecutors in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, accusing him of being convicted at the first trial. In the retrial, Weinstein also faces new charges that allegedly attacked an unidentified woman in Manhattan in 2006.
At the first trial, prosecutors portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who manipulates a woman with promises of progress in her Hollywood career, collaborating with a hotel room or private apartment, overwhelmed and attacked it.
Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years after being separately convicted of California rape, so even if he was acquitted at a retrial in New York, he could still spend the rest of his life in prison. He has not yet begun serving that sentence and remains in custody in New York since his conviction was overturned.
In September, Weinstein was rushed to the hospital and had emergency heart surgery. This episode is one of several health horrors when he was taken into custody at Rikers Island Prison in New York City, and his representatives say he is receiving inadequate medical care.
More than 100 women, including a well-known actress, accused Weinstein of fraud. He denied the allegations and said that the sexual encounter he had was agreed.
Weinstein’s film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, collapsed after initial charges of sexual misconduct.
