Israeli forces launched a new aviation and artillery strike and called on the Lebanese government to enforce a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November.
Israeli forces launched a wave of strikes across parts of Lebanon on March 22 in response to the launch of a rocket targeting the Galilee region.
A report published by Lebanon’s official National News Agency shows that Israeli aircraft and artillery have attacked more than 12 different communities in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah began launching rockets in Israeli controlled regions on October 8, 2023, just hours after Hamas launched a massive attack in southern Israel. Israeli forces fired fire on the Israeli-Lebanon border for nearly a year before sending ground forces to Lebanon last October.
On November 27, 2024, the Israeli government agreed to enter a ceasefire, under which its forces will halt the strike in Lebanon and withdraw ground forces from the state within 60 days. The Lebanese government then agreed to curb Hezbollah and establish control of the tropical border areas.
When the original withdrawal deadline rose in January, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he was still waiting for Hezbollah to completely withdraw north of the Ritani River.
Lebanese President Joseph Own expressed his dissatisfaction last month after he announced that Israeli forces would remain in front of his home post.
Aoun also said Lebanese troops are ready to deploy along the border and to meet their country’s ceasefire requirements.
Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire in January, under which Hamas began releasing some of the hostages they had taken from Israel on October 7, 2023, but Israeli ground forces limited their footprint across the Gaza Strip.
The Gaza Cerezi collapsed this month amid a disagreement over how to advance the three-stage ceasefire framework. Israel supported an extension of the first ceasefire phase, but Hamas representatives rejected the idea, demanding that all political parties proceed to the second phase and that Israeli forces withdraw from the Gaza Strip entirely.
