SYDNEY – Former police officer Tiara Brown has become the WBC World Featherweight Champion, beating Sky Nicholson in Saturday’s split decision victory.
Brown, 36, won the Nicholson belt when the judges scored 97-93 and 96-94.
Brown (19–0) fell on the canvas in tears when he was announced as the winner. This was the first occupational loss for Australian Nicholson (12–1).
Brown was an officer at the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., and most recently served at both the Fort Myers Police Department, a Florida native.
Fort Myers PD wished Brown good luck before the 10th round match, saying on Instagram “Always a fighter, in and out of the ring.”
Brown is the boxing coach for the Fort Myers Police Athletic League.
Speaking to broadcaster Dozen about ringside, Brown cried out to God and her hometown of Fort Myers, saying that he had been “more than 20 years of hoping for this moment.”
The new champion said she hasn’t been focused on her next match yet.
“I like my options. My options are good (but) for now I just want to go home, eat cupcakes and cookies and watch the cartoons,” Brown said.
Nicholson, 29, won the title last April in an unanimous decision against Danish Sarah Muffhod in Las Vegas. She made two successful title defenses before facing Brown.
