Despite the massive new contract, Miles Garrett does not regret his trade demands

The star’s defensive side said his demands will open difficult but necessary debates about the team’s future.

Despite signing a massive new extension, Miles Garrett, the defensive side of the Cleveland Browns, has no regrets about requesting a deal.

Garrett demanded trade on February 3, spending Super Bowl Week, reiterating his desire to go elsewhere and chase the championship. However, last week he signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Browns. At a press conference on March 14, Garrett said his trading demands would prompt difficult but necessary discussions about building a team into candidates, and he would prove himself to skeptical fans by continuing to play at a high level.

The reporter asked Garrett what has changed since February.

“Just constantly communicating with the team) and the general manager alone can talk about this team’s plans and future, turn this around and turn Cleveland into a winner as soon as possible.”

The drama began when Garrett officially requested a deal. In his statement, the overall pick of the previous No. 1 said he wasn’t “satisfied” and wanted to win the Super Bowl. Garrett then appeared on multiple TV and radio shows and podcasts during Super Bowl Week, and said that the Browns have not committed to the victory they are now and that at this stage of his career, winning the championship and competing is what he wants to do.
However, over the next few weeks, Berry repeatedly stated that he had no intention of swapping the franchise’s face. Things came to mind last week when Garrett requested a meeting with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam. Haslam reportedly refused to meet Garrett because he didn’t want the player to go above Berry’s head. It also revealed reports that Garrett was willing to sit down in the game until he moved in. But once he signed the extension, the drama came to a break.

Garrett declared that he had no regrets about publishing his request. “I think I was frustrated. I feel that it helped us grow and have a difficult conversation, but it has helped us to generate a little more discourse, build some relationships and have conversations that help us to reaffirm them,” he said. “And now we feel like we’re in a better place, and now we can go from there and grow.”

He also revealed what caused the frustration. “It wasn’t about money,” he said. “It’s always about winning, and that’s where my frustration is there.”

The Browns have participated in the playoffs twice since 2020. They lost in the divisional round to Kansas City chief in the 2020 playoffs. They lost in the 2023 wildcard round to the Houston Texans. However, last season, the Browns were 3-14 and now hold their second overall pick as a result.

Garrett said his main goal is to deliver the Browns’ first championship during the Super Bowl era. He said he was happy to help his team recruit new pieces to win the game and do deep playoff runs. Whether the team succeeds or takes over the struggle, Garrett recognizes he is the focus and it is his duty to make the most of every player in the locker room.

The six-time All-Pro Bowler and the 2023 NFL defensive player of the year remained on the team that drafted him, confirming his commitment to bringing a loyal championship for Cleveland and the Browns.

“It’s always been my plan, from the start,” he said. “Even when I was in college from high school, I was that one-time guy. There’s a place that feels like home and you infiltrate yourself into the community. The Canton part sounds great. The players want to be in the Hall of Fame. It’s an incredible individual award, but the community and the city remember the championship. That’s what I want to do.”

Reporters noted that fans may be skeptical of Garrett’s commitment after seeing all the drama unfold. The defensive said he would let his play talk.

“I go out, play, play, I’m a great teammate, a great leader, the best person on this field, I keep turning those (negative) opinions and reinforcing (positive) opinions so I can be on the Cleveland Browns field.
