The law comes into effect in 2026 and requires citizens to obtain permission and receive safety training before they can receive safety training.
Colorado Governor Jared Police signed the bill to law on April 10, requiring people to obtain permission and receive safety training before purchasing certain guns.
The law also prohibits buying and selling devices that allow guns that contain bump stocks to be fired quickly.
“For those who have no gun safety training, it is very important to have it. This bill ensures that people are given that education in how to operate weapons safely.
Under the law, you cannot purchase semi-automatic rifles or semi-automatic shotguns with separable magazines unless they are offered by Hunter Educational Training and “Basic Firearms Safety Courses” provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Local sheriffs must sign off upon completion of the course, and applicants have also undergone background checks and vow not to violate state laws regarding guns.
Individuals who violate the law face a felony charge of a Class 2 misdemeanor for their first offence and a subsequent offence.
Dealers found to have violated the law shall revoke their license.
All towns for gun safety advocating gun restrictions were one of the organisations to praise the bill.
Other groups said the bill violated constitutional rights.
Escalante said the group is considering legal options.
“We’re not going to support that. We’re not going to allow Jared Police…and Congress forces us to buy back the right to buy America’s most commonly used rifles,” he said.
Rep. Lauren Bebert (R-Colo.) also criticized Colorado’s law.
Boebert and other Republicans have called on the U.S. Department of Justice to sue Colorado over the law.
