Canadian officials are scheduled to meet with the US Secretary of Commerce in Washington today. After dust with US President Donald Trump, which ended with Ontario suspending additional fees for electricity exports to the US.
US Ambassador Kirsten Hillman and Ontario Premier Dominique LeBlanc, Finance Minister Doug Ford, have met with Howard Lutnick. Ford says the goal of the conference is to get a consistent sense of the Trump administration’s tariff plans.
Trump expanded his world trade war on Wednesday by clashing with all countries, including Canada, and earned 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum.
The previous day, Trump threatened to double his job in Canada, but he retreated after Ford agreed to stop the additional charges for electricity that Ontario sells to three US provinces.
Elsewhere in the US capital, Trump’s choice for the next US ambassador to Canada will ask today’s questions as relations between the two countries are strained by the threat of tariffs and annexation.
Former Michigan Rep. Pete Hextra is scheduled to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a nomination hearing.
