Argentina Flood Kills at least 10 people in Bahia Blanca Port City

BUENOS AIRES – Torrential rains in Argentine’s port city of Bahia Blanca, southwest of the capital Buenos Aires, left at least 10 deaths, causing significant flooding on Friday.

More than 260 millimeters (10 inches) of rain fell within hours, destroying bridges and collapsing asphalt roads, the city said, adding that more deaths could not be ruled out.

“All available resources are deployed to provide assistance to local governments, state governments, navy and the Argentine Army,” Bahia Blanca authorities said in X.

The storm forced evacuation of homes and health centres in major commercial port cities, approximately 600 km (400 miles) from the capital. Social media images show the mother running away from a flooded hospital with her newborn baby.

Defense Minister Patricia Brulich and Defense Minister Lewis Petri visited the city and posted images on the social network of military trucks patrolling flooded cities at night.

President Jovier Mairi cancelled his scheduled activities in Mendoza on Saturday, spokesman Manuel Adorni said. He didn’t say if Mairay would travel to town or not.

Economy Minister Luis Capto said in X that the government has approved pesos 10 billion ($9.2 million) of financial aid for Bahia Blanca, home to 300,000 residents of Buenos Aires.
