The 2026 meeting will be held in November 2026.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made it clear that if Australia successfully bids with the Pacific, the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference will take place in Adelaide.
The prime minister was running an Adelaide campaign in Nona’s Cucinna, located outside Holden Hill, a start voter who is held at a thin margin of 0.5%. He is the only federal elector based in Adelaide, currently still held by a liberal coalition of states.
Speaking specifically about the COP meeting, Albanese spoke of the city’s qualifications as a potential renewable energy superpower.
“We haven’t won the bid, but if the bid is successful, my choice is to have it here in Adelaide,” Prime Minister Albanese said.
“This maps Adelaide as a global city. One of the things Climate Change Conference does is introduce this beautiful Adelaide city to the world.

“Convening COP, the Climate Change Conference, means that we’re making money internationally, and that’s an economic boost wherever we are.”
Prime Minister Peter Marinauska said he is “exceptionally proud” that 80% of all energy consumed in South Australia comes from renewable energy, resulting from a plan that reaches 100%.
“We are expected to reach 100% by the end of 2027 in terms of net renewal, meaning that this location would be better able to host police officers than anywhere else in the country,” Marinauskas told reporters in Adelaide.
COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024, and COP30 will be held in Belem Brazil in November 2025.

So far, competition for zero zero
Federal workers have pledged to transform the country’s energy grid, so by 2030 82% have been supported by renewable energy and by 2050 they have been supported by net zero.
Workers will unlock $8 billion of renewable energy development through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation if they are re-elected.

In contrast, federal opposition remains supportive of net zero by 2050, but are throwing the nuke into the mix.
In a speech launching the campaign on April 13th, Dutton said Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen’s “renewable energy-only” energy policy was ineffective.
“Australians are paying some of the highest electricity prices in the world under this government’s renewable energy-only policy train.
The Union is also looking into current energy prices.
State Senator Stevens said the community is upset.
