Democrats are pushing for investigations of Florida insurance companies

TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – House Democrats are calling on the governor to investigate Florida insurance companies.

House minority leader Fentris Driskel, D Tampa, called on letters from both Governor Ron de Santis and House Speaker Daniel Perez to further investigate recent news from property insurance companies claiming to be suffering, simultaneously turning billions of profits into the companies they own.

“We’re pushing that accountability, asking for an investigation, asking Florida homes to use the power of that subpoena. Let’s take some people swear and ask a few questions,” Driskel said.

Democrats say the letters to DeSantis and Perez were sparked by a report on a recent secret study by the Tampa Bay Times. The study found that insurers are sending billions of dollars to affiliate companies or shareholders instead of using those profits to benefit policyholders.
“We know from stories we’ve heard in areas praised by the hurricanes that they’ve been destroyed by floods and people don’t get what they need from their property insurance companies,” Driskel said.

Driskell said a 2022 survey confirmed that top insurance companies were ripping off daily Floridians and lying to Congress.

Apart from the news, Florida insurance commissioner Michael Yaworski points to the stability of the markets emerging in the state.

“We really see the good news coming out in every aspect,” Yaworsky said. “The litigation rate has dropped by more than 30% across the state, so reforms are working, and it takes time for consumers to truly feel the impact and impact of all of those.
