Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee supports 2024, which recognizes Florida base as its own species 2024

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee recognizes Florida base as a unique species separate from largemouth bass, and will incorporate changes to the species’ name into the rules.

At a meeting in February, the committee supported a 2024 name change based on multiple studies using genetic analysis that determined Florida bass to be a unique species.

This consensus led the American Fisheries Association to establish the name of the fish as “Florida Base” and changed the scien faction of both IT and largemouth bass, further differentiating them from each other.

“We are pleased to announce that we are a great source of patience,” said Tom Greff, director of FWC’s freshwater fisheries management. “Florida bases are bigger than any other bases, and recognition of them as unique species underscores how special they are. This distinction strengthens our commitment to saving and promoting Florida bases, ensuring future generations continue to experience the thrill of catching true giants.”

This classification is a step in the right direction to promote efforts to maintain biodiversity and fish species conservation, essential for sustainable recreational fishing.

Those who want to learn more can do so by visiting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation website.
