Southwest Airlines Lay off 15% of Corporate Workers

Southwest Airlines announced it would fire around 1,750 employees, or 15% of corporate workers. According to an official statement released earlier today, the cuts will primarily affect corporate overhead and leadership positions.

“This decision is unprecedented in its 53-year history and changes require difficult decisions,” CEO Bob Jordan said in a news release. “We are in a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines into a faster, faster, more agile organization.”

The Southwest announcement marked an unwanted milestone – the first major layoff in the airline’s 53-year history. This change reflects changes in strategy after pressure from Elliott Investment Management. Southwest plans to save $220 million in 2025 and $300 million in 2026 through these cuts. CEO Robert Jordan announced that the layoffs will begin in April and will be largely over by the end of the second quarter, with most affected employees continuing to receive their salaries and benefits during this period. Southwest Airlines serves 14 Florida airports. Here is a list of these airports:

Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Southwest Florida (RSW) Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) Orlando International Airport (MCO) Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) Northwest Florida Beach International Airport (ECP) Pensacola International Airport (PNS) Miami International Airport (MIA) Sarasota – Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) Tampa International Airport (TPA)
