TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Pineras County lawmakers have introduced a bill that will change all references to the Gulf of Mexico in Florida’s state law to the “Gulf of America,” proposed by President Donald Trump.
The 70-page bill was introduced Tuesday by Republican state Sen. Nick Dicegley.

“Here at Pinellas, we’re making it official. Today we submitted the law to ensure that Florida records reflect this beautiful body of water – the new name of the Gulf of America. Thank you, @Realdonaldtrump, Thank you for your bold leadership!” Diceglie wrote in X’s post.
The proposed law coincides with President’s Executive Order 14172, entitled “Restoring Names that Respect for America’s Greatness.” Trump also declared “American Gulf Day” on February 9th.
Gov. Ron DeSantis first used the name in the official context, and used it to describe the Bay in an executive order declaring a state of emergency ahead of the winter storm that affected Florida last month.
Google Maps has recently been updated to reflect the name change. Non-US users will continue to see the waters labeled Gulf of Mexico.
