New York (AP) -Waffle House Restaurant has temporarily placed an additional egg for 50 cents due to the largest bird flu in 10 years.
Georgia’s company stated that the cost was dramatically increased due to the lack of eggs.
Bird flu has been forced to massacre millions of chicken in a month, and in the summer of 2023, the price of eggs has been increased to more than twice the cost.
The average price per door nationwide reached $ 4.15 in December. This is not as expensive as the $ 4.82 record set two years ago, but the agricultural sector predicts that egg prices will rise by 20 % this year.
Waffle House, which is well known as a place to get cheap breakfast, said that additional eggs will come into effect this week and apply to all menus. A two -egg breakfast at a restaurant with toast and side was listed for $ 7.75 on Tuesday.
“I hope the fluctuations in these prices will be short -lived, but we cannot predict how this shortage will last,” said the company.
Restaurants continue to monitor egg prices and states that they will adjust or delete additional charges as the market situation allows.
Last month, Louisiana’s first fatal bird flu was reported. According to the Disease Control Prevention Center, there have been 67 human bird flu infections in the United States since 2024.
H5n1 bird flu is widely spread among wild birds, chicken, cows, and other animals. The growing in the environment increased the possibility of being exposed to people and caught it potentially, but it was rare.
Health authorities encourage people who are in contact with sick or dead birds to take precautionary measures. This includes respiratory, eye protection, and gloves for handling poultry.
