Florida officials warn of SunPass text message scam

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Officials are warning Floridians of a “smishing” scam where scammers pose as Sunpasses and demand payment for unpaid tolls.

“Sunpass would like to remind customers to be wary of text messages and other communications requesting immediate payment of outstanding toll balances,” a Sunpass statement said. “These messages often pressure you to pay quickly to avoid deferred fees and links to fake websites to collect personal information.”

Customers are asked to ignore the text and are warned against clicking any links it may contain. Instead, you must visit the Sunpass website and log into your account for up-to-date information.

If Sunpass contacts customers, it will do so via email from customerservice@sunpass.com or noreply@sunpass.com, or text from number 786727.

Sunpath tips to avoid attacks

Please be careful:

Unknown or hidden numbers – In some cases, scammers hide their identity, but they can also “spoof” local numbers that appear to be “real.” False claims regarding payment information issues. Fake invoices with instructions to contact them. Requests for personal information such as name, address, social security number, and credit card details. An alarming message that creates a sense of panic.

What to do:

Don’t click on links, reply to unknown text messages, or call numbers you don’t recognize. Don’t respond to messages even if you ask them to “stop texting” you. Remove all suspicious text. Please update your smart device’s OS and security apps. Report smishing attempts to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at IC3.gov.
