Republican lawmakers typically introduce tax exemption bills, but two Democrats are leading the charge with their own proposals for the upcoming Florida Legislature.
State Sen. Kristen Arrington (D-Kissimmee) and State Rep. Dan Daley (D-Coral Springs) announced the filing of SB 218 and HB 39. The bill, titled “Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans,” would amend Florida law to: Increases the property tax exemption for disabled veterans from $5,000 to $10,000.
Under this new law, tax exemptions would increase for certain disabled veterans. The proposal outlines the criteria for individuals to qualify for this exemption. To be eligible, applicants must be former military members, Florida residents, and honorably discharged. In addition, they must have a disability rating of 10% or higher, which must be due to misfortune or incurred during wartime service.
“Our nation’s military members risk their lives to protect our country. This tax exemption expansion will provide much-needed financial relief to veterans and their surviving spouses, easing their burden, and We honor their sacrifice,” said Senator Arrington.

The tax exemption applies to the appraised value of the property, and $10,000 of the property value is exempt from taxation. Veterans can verify their disability status by presenting a certificate from the U.S. government or Department of Veterans Affairs to their county property appraiser. The bill also maintains an existing provision that allows unremarried surviving spouses of disabled veterans to claim similar tax credits. If approved, the new tax exemption would go into effect July 1, 2025, and provide financial relief to disabled veterans and their surviving spouses through reduced property tax liability.
“This bill is a way to show our gratitude to the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Rep. Daley. “By doubling the property tax exemption for disabled veterans, we are taking a meaningful step toward easing their financial burden and honoring their dedication. It is our responsibility to ensure these heroes and their families receive the support they deserve.”
