A 31-year-old woman was bitten by an alligator and died Sunday afternoon while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near the Burr Street Trailhead in Little Big Econ State Forest, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.
According to FWC officials, Seminole County deputies responded to a report of an assault near the Burr Street Trailhead around 1:30 p.m. Investigators said the woman, whose name has not been released, was swimming in the river when she was attacked.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, FWC said.
A contracted alligator trapper was called to the scene, and the FWC said the investigation is still ongoing.
The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office closed access to the Burr Street Trailhead while deputies assisted FWC at the scene.
Boy survives attack in Marion County on the same day
The attack in Seminole County is the third in the past seven days, including one in Marion County. An 8-foot-7-inch alligator bit the victim’s hand while fishing from the shore at Nelson’s Fish Camp in Marion County. FWC said the victim is not from Florida and was fishing with his father at the time of the incident.
FWC said the alligator was killed after the incident.
