Ronald Carl Peavy II, 49, of Old Town, Florida, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. The sentence was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
“The days when these drug traffickers were distributing deadly drugs in our communities are over, thanks to the excellent investigative efforts of the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office, supported by the DEA. Methamphetamine has been a scourge that has devastated entire communities for far too long, but under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the Department of Justice is aggressively pursuing drug traffickers through operations,” said U.S. Attorney Heekin. “Take back America and give us the safe, drug-free streets we deserve.”
Court documents say Dixie County sheriff’s deputies found the defendant’s car parked in the middle of an intersection early in the morning. After the vehicle was not running for several minutes, the deputy approached and found the defendant asleep with the vehicle running and parked. The deputy woke the defendant up and confirmed that he had no medical problems. After smelling marijuana inside the vehicle, the deputy searched the vehicle and found two zippered cases, one containing over 400 grams of methamphetamine and the other containing approximately 77 grams of marijuana.
“The successful prosecution of this criminal sends a clear message that drug trafficking has serious consequences,” said Dixie County Sheriff Darby Butler. “The large amount of methamphetamine recovered in this incident represented a serious threat to the safety of our community. Thanks to the hard work of our deputies and the strong cooperation between local, state and federal law enforcement partners, dangerous drugs were taken off the streets and criminals were held accountable for their actions. We remain committed to working with our partners at all levels to keep Dixie County safe.”
This case was a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Adam Hapner and James A. McCain.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a national effort to mobilize the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel illegal immigration, achieve the complete elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from perpetrators of violent crime.
