New report shows Florida hospitals that provide the most emergency care

The Florida Safety Net Hospital Alliance shared new data for 2025 supporting the findings of its groundbreaking first report on hospital physician training programs. This data conclusively establishes safety net hospitals as leaders in graduate medical education (GME) in Florida.

“This report shows great success. Our hospitals are always on call, provide the most critical and complex care in the state, and are among the best in the nation. This update validates the results of the underlying GME Compliance and Quality 2020-24 report, which found that safety net hospitals attract more residents than other hospitals,” said Justin Sr., CEO of Safety Net Hospitals.

“This 2025 data proves once and for all that safety net hospitals are setting the pace for training Florida’s next generation of physicians. Safety net hospitals account for just 14% of hospitals,” said Lindy Kennedy, president and chief operating officer of Safety Net Hospitals. “Almost 50% of new physicians choose us to complete their training, and that’s because medical school graduates are looking for high-quality programs when considering a residency. For Florida families, that means more communities have access to health care.” Our doctors are well-trained and caring. ”

More doctors are choosing safety-net hospitals for education and training

● Safety Net Hospital capped this year’s 93% match match rate to 100% after supplementary matches were announced.

● Although safety net hospitals make up only 14% of hospitals, we find that 60% of Florida’s top-performing hospitals are safety net hospitals, producing more than 700 matches and a match rate that is higher than the statewide match rate.

● Safety Net Hospital’s new programs produce an impressive 100% match rate each year and dominate the list of new programs. This proves that the quality of GME is more important than the year the GME program was launched.

Other Florida hospitals grapple with physician shortage challenges

The percentage of medical school graduates who choose to continue their training at a Florida hospital increased from 85.8% in 2020 to 90.1% in 2025. Since 2020, the following numbers have increased:

● New physician training in Florida increased by nearly 50%.

● Available slots have increased by over 40%.

● The number of hospitals implementing GME increased from 58 hospitals in 2020 to 65 hospitals in 2025.

● The number of hospitals with 70 or more matches and at or above the statewide match rate has doubled.

“Excellence in care and excellence in training go hand in hand, which is why our hospitals consistently lead in both,” concluded Senior. “Every physician we train is another step in ensuring every Florida family continues to receive excellent care close to home.”

Members of the Florida Safety Net Hospital Alliance:

Ascension Florida, Broward Health, Halifax Health, Jackson Health System, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Lee Health, Memorial Healthcare System, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Orlando Health, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System;
