AARP recently asked Floridians ages 45 and older about their biggest concerns regarding issues such as health, retirement and homeownership.

health

Among Floridians surveyed, 65% reported that prescription drug costs were one of their most concerning monthly expenses.

nursing care issues

Of Floridians surveyed, 58% currently provide care or have provided care to an adult relative or friend in the past.

home ownership

Most Floridians said homeowners insurance is their biggest concern, followed by property taxes. Other recent polls in the state have reported similar results.

According to the AARP survey, 69% of people said the main factors for leaving their current community as they get older are the desire for disaster-resistant housing and lower overall housing costs.

The survey revealed that 74% of Florida residents have homeowners or renters insurance that covers losses in the event of a natural disaster. However, 74% of people who don’t have a homeowners insurance plan say they don’t have a plan because it’s too expensive.

63% of respondents also said they were very concerned about whether they could afford homeowner or renter insurance.

About 90% of Floridians age 45 and older say it is very or very important to them to continue living in their home as they age, and about 80% think it is very important to have affordable housing options in their area.

social security, retirement benefits

58% believe their legislators are not doing enough to protect Social Security for retirement and future generations.

When it comes to employer-sponsored retirement plans, 35% of Floridians age 45 and older say their employer doesn’t offer them a way to save for retirement.
