MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – A Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed during a fight Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office announced.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo was a young member of the agency at just 27 years old.

Few details about the incident have been released, but NBC 6 South Florida reports that Jaramillo was responding to a traffic accident on Southwest 128th Avenue when the fight broke out.

Sheriff Royce Cordero-Stutz told reporters that Jaramillo was “subjected to a brutal attack.” The deputy was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

NBC 6 South Florida reported that the suspect may have been found dead after the incident, but officials have not confirmed that report.

Cordero Stutz said Jaramillo served the community with “professionalism, dedication and an unwavering determination to protect others.” He was a graduate of Miami-Dade’s Horizontal Class 6 class, which welcomed nearly 30 new police officers in May 2024.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies during this difficult time,” the sheriff said in a social media post. “Vice President Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and courage will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and serving with him.”

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levine Cava also commented on Friday afternoon’s shooting, writing, “Our entire community stands with this brave police officer, his family, his fellow deputies, and all of the men and women in uniform who put themselves at risk to protect our community.”
