ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — An 18-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with DUI after Port St. Lucie Police say he was driving the wrong way and nearly collided head-on with one of his sergeants.

According to the police department, just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, 18-year-old Jake Abbott was driving in the wrong direction on Okeechobee Road near mile marker 123/124.

According to police reports, Abbott nearly collided head-on with a PSLPD sergeant who was driving home from work.

PSLPD said the sergeant swerved to the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision. Abbott then allegedly fled the scene after radioing his location and the make and model of Abbott’s car.

Police said the sergeant used spotlights to illuminate the vehicle and warn other motorists because Abbott continued to drive the wrong way, leaving other motorists at risk.

According to PSLPD, Abbott was driving the wrong way and eventually came to a stop. The sergeant made contact with Abbott and noticed a strong odor of alcohol and an empty Twisted Tea can inside the vehicle.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and arrested Abbott. He was charged with driving under the influence and eluding.

Video of the incident shows deputies handcuffing Abbott, and he can be heard saying, “No, I hear you. You guys have to do what you gotta do, boss.”

PSLPD warns that anyone who provides alcohol to anyone under the age of 21 may be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
