Every year, around the holiday season, local law enforcement becomes more active to warn communities about porch pirates who rob homeowners.
Based on conventional wisdom, most people would expect crime to spike in their local area in November and December. it’s not.
Recent data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer looked at the number of residential robberies in each state for each month over the most recent 12 months available and calculated the average number of robberies per month.
The FBI says July seems to be the month with the most residential burglaries nationwide, and September is generally the safest month.
However, October is the most dangerous month for home burglaries in Florida. Although Florida’s annual robbery rate is below the national average, experts warned Floridians to be extra vigilant this month. This number is 33% lower than the national average theft rate.

The FBI calculated the average number of monthly robberies per 100,000 people in each state by comparing robbery data to each state’s population, allowing for fair comparisons between states.
Sam Bitar, a construction company with S-Line Contractors (https://www.slinecontractors.com/), said in the work he does for clients, he has noticed more robberies in the South than in the North.
“Seven of the top 10 states are located in the southern United States, suggesting that these states may be at higher risk for residential burglary in general. When looking at the bottom 10 states with the lowest risk for burglary, many are located in the Northeast. This regional difference can be attributed to a variety of factors, including law enforcement resources, housing type, and economic struggles,” Vitale said.
