A suspect involved in a $20 million fraud ring turned himself in on Friday and is in custody, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.
The sheriff’s office announced in a social media post that a man named Hai Liu from Staten Island, New York, turned himself in to the Volusia County Precinct after being identified by detectives in connection with a scam that cost a Deltona woman $12,000.
They say the victim was contacted by a fake Apple Support technician, which resulted in the victim purchasing $12,000 in Lowe’s gift cards.
Detectives reported that Liu was later caught on camera using the gift card at a Lowe’s in Brooklyn.
With the cooperation of the Loews Police Department and the New York Police Department, detectives were able to positively identify Liu and obtained a warrant charging him with grand theft and organized fraud scheme.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced that Liu is one of seven suspects charged in a $20 million fraud ring that targeted more than 1,800 people in 45 states.
After being released from a New York prison, Liu turned himself in after pleading guilty to the charges in Volusia.
Body camera footage from the arrest was posted on the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, showing him handing identification to officers before being handcuffed.
He remains in custody with bail set at $65,000.
