Below is an official statement from the US Lawyer’s Office for the Central District of Florida regarding the sentence of a Lake County man convicted of firearm trafficking charges.
US District Judge Thomas Patrick Barber was sentenced to Jose G. Medina, 50, Leesburg, for 37 months in federal prison for knowingly making false statements in connection with the acquisition of a firearm and the federal firearm licensee (FFL) maintaining false information in official records. Medina pleaded guilty on March 5, 2025.
Court records show that between January 1st and December 31st, 2023, Medina illegally purchased multiple illegal firearms from the FFLS in the Central Florida district for other individuals. Some of these firearms were later intercepted by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as other individuals attempted to transport them across the US border to Mexico.
On May 27, 2023, an individual encountered a CBP after attempting to enter Mexico at the Eagle Pass (Texas) port. He was about to bring in 10 handguns, nine rifles, seven shotguns, 20 ammunition magazines and a large amount of ammunition into Mexico. Individuals said he is traveling from Mexico’s Guanajuato, San Diego dela Union and Orlando, Florida, areas where Mexican cartels fight for territorial control. Medina had bought one of these recovered firearms nine days ago.
