TALHASSEE, Fla. — Florida is ranked among the top states in higher education by the 10th consecutive US News & World Report, according to a Monday announcement from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The state secured first place based on affordability, graduation rates and student debt levels. Florida continues to provide the lowest in-state tuition and fees in the country, rising nationwide with a four-year college graduation rate.

“Florida public universities offer the lowest in-state tuition fees in the country, allowing students to receive quality education without any major debt burden,” Desantis said in a statement. “Over three-quarters of Florida students graduated from loan-free and ranked number one in their four-year graduation rate.”

Seven universities of Florida created a top 100 public institution list for the 2026 rankings, marking the highest number in state history. The state also ranks in the top two nationally at most of the top 100 public universities, with seven institutions being recognized as one of the best public universities for veterans.

University Rankings and Highlights

The University of Florida ranked seventh among public universities and 30th overall. UF has generated over 400 patents over the past three years, exceeding $1 billion in annual research spending, and has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal as the top public university on time with the lowest net cost. Florida State University ranked second to 21st among public universities, ranking 12th in its first year of experience. The University of South Florida has ranked 43rd among public universities, climbing two locations since last year. It was also listed in 12th place for the highest value and 19th place for innovation. Florida International University ranked 46th in public universities and was ranked number one nationwide for its upward economic mobility. The University of Central Florida has ranked 57th in four public universities across four spots. Florida Atlantic University has made its top 100 with the highest ranking ever, the No. 100. Florida A&M University ranked 92nd among public universities and has historically been distinguished as a top black college or university (HBCU) for the seventh consecutive year. Florida’s New College ranked 10th among public liberal arts colleges across the country. Florida Polytechnic University was ranked number one in the Southern Regional Public University for the fifth consecutive year and third for its highest value in local public schools. The University of West Florida ranked sixth among the public universities in the southern region, rising four locations.

State officials said the rankings reflect long-term investments in Florida’s higher education system, which aim to lower tuition fees and keep degrees completion rates high.
