TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida Attorney General James Usmier has declared that state residents can carry their guns freely. The change follows a ruling by the Tallahassee Court of Appeals, which defeated the ban decades ago.
Uthmeier said the state legislators think they want to “clean up” gun laws for the next session. This now draws people attention to the state capitol, just as lawmakers are considering the next steps in future legislation.
Uthmeier spoke to the 8 on your side, but he said he didn’t want to go into details right now, but added that lawmakers are reading and analyzing the state’s current gun laws.
“Open carry doesn’t mean open carry anywhere in Florida,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Sheriff Judd said the current state of the law is a bit unstable, but he could hope for more direction from Congress.
“I spoke with the Senate Speaker, the House Speaker, and the governor’s Chief of Staff, and explained that we need to address this through the legislative process and tighten the rules.
Just as Sheriff Judd and Usmeyer urge lawmakers to narrow down open carry laws, Capitol Democrats say increased violence and temperatures are as high as across the country.
“Can you imagine how parents would feel next when they take their kids to the park? Are they openly roaming around on the AR-15 while they try to play in the playground? I think this is becoming too extreme.
The session won’t be kicked off until January, so during that time, state officials will suggest who want to open the carry and remain cautious.
