TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida has a new “Super Speedoter” law that puts people in prison.
The law came into effect on July 1, 2025. Under the law, anyone who exceeds the posted speed limit of 50 mph or more, or 100 miles, anywhere, could face higher fines and prisons.
DUI driver arrested after burning out “to impress a girl” at Bradenton’s red light: police
A video recently released by the Florida Highway Patrol shows a driver speeding across the Bayside Bridge in Pinellas County. According to the arrest report, the driver cut off the vehicle and speeded at 111 mph.
The driver, a woman, was pulled, put in handcuffs and taken to prison.
FHP Sergeant Steve Gaskins said the new law gives law enforcement officials another tool to keep state roads and highways safer.
“Not only can they hand you over, they can hand you over at any time and they can give you a ticket, so now we can take you to jail. You’re going to see a fine of over $500. You’re going to be watching 30 days in jail.”
Repeated offenders face $1,000 fines and 90 days of prison.
Gaskins says the super speeders risk their lives.
“Hopefully people will realize you can be pulled, you can actually go to prison, you can go to prison as well as tickets, but you will go to prison and your car will be arrested on your records,” Gaskins said.
