Cape Coral, Fla. (WFLA) – Former U.S. Rep. Madison Cowthorne was arrested in Florida on Wednesday.

The Republican who represented North Carolina from 2021 to 2023 was accused of not appearing in Collier County Court.

Court records obtained by NBC affiliate WBBH show that a warrant was issued for Cowthorne’s arrest on Wednesday after missing out on his arrest that morning. He was scheduled to appear on August 19 after being quoted by Naples police for driving without a valid license.

Cowthorne, who lives in Cape Coral, was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. He was released from prison “quickly” after being processed, according to a statement arising from a former lawmaker.

“Madison maintains a very busy schedule and did not appear in court this morning due to misunderstanding of the schedule,” the statement said in part by WBBH.

Cowthorne is rumoured to be keeping an eye on Congressional run in southwestern Florida after losing his 2022 re-election bid.
