Ocala, Fla. (WFLA) — A 9-year-old student was arrested Monday morning after showing off a gun loaded on a school bus, according to the Ocala Police Department.

Officials were called to a bus on their way to elementary school after a student told the driver that the child had a gun.

Police said the child allowed the gun to be taken from a relative’s “safe room” and brought it to the bus to show the other children.

The 9-year-old is in custody and faces several charges including possession of firearms on school property, armed robbery, grand theft of firearms, carrying concealed firearms and disruption to school functions.

“The safety of our children is our number one priority,” Ocala police wrote in a social media post. “This incident shows why it’s important to be vigilant and report concerns promptly. We strive to support schools and communities while pursuing justice.”
