TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Former chairman of Florida Paul Renner announced Wednesday that he was in the race to become the state’s next governor.
Renner made the following statement in his announcement:
“As a member of the House and speaker, I stood with Ron DeSantis to brand Florida’s freedom state. I’m running for governor, so once the DeSantis era is over, I’ll be able to defend my victory and solve any remaining challenges.
“As a military veteran of two wars, a state prosecutor and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, I fought tough battles. I will never step back from the fight for conservative values. As a father, I am committed to ensuring safety and prosperity for the next generation of Florida.
“I know how to defend and expand my role as a major conservative nation in the country. We assure you that we will remain a key partner of President Donald Trump in his efforts to make America great again. I have helped Florida have the legislative victory they do today. Amendments 3 and 4. I have also led the statewide effort to win the school board race and beat awakened activists, ensuring that children remain focused on education rather than indoctrination.
“As the son of a pastor and a teacher, I have learned that the most important thing in my life is my faith in God, your family, and in integrity and hard work. From many years in the military, I bring to me the values of the male and female veterans I have served.
Renner was elected to the State Capitol in 2015 and became a speaker in the Florida House in 2022. He served in that role until 2024.
At a press conference Wednesday, DeSantis called Renner’s execution “unwise.”
“I’m not supporting Paul Renner. I think it was an unwise decision to take part in the race,” DeSantis said.
Renner will join Byron Donald, David Jolly and several other candidates in the race for Florida’s next governor.
