BROWORD COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Highway Patrol says a man has been killed driving a truck designed to minimize the impact of a crash that occurred early Saturday morning.

At I-75 southbound in Broward County, around 1:30am, a truck strung lines across the road and shoulders, moving at speed. Behind the truck was a crash truck from the Scorpion, a specially designed vehicle that includes a crample zone to absorb the impact of the crash and protect highway workers.

The third vehicle, a pickup truck towing the boat, was up behind the workers, collided with the back of the scorpion truck and could not be slowed down in time.

The force of the collision forced the Scorpion truck into the truck that preceded it, causing the driver to be seriously injured. The 64-year-old Miami man was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died of injuries.

The two men on the truck’s paint line were not injured.

The pickup driver, a 42-year-old man from Pompano Beach, was suffered minor injuries along with one of his passengers, a 50-year-old man. The second passenger in the pickup, Fort, 48. The Lauderdale man was seriously injured, FHP said.

No additional information has been provided and the crash is still under investigation by FHP.
