TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom on Wednesday.

Among those awarded were music legend Jimmy Buffett and two former governors.

The sheriff explains the final moments before the disappearance of 18-year-old Giovanni Peretier, and his death moment.

Buffett, who passed away in 2023, has entertained Floridians for decades with his Margaritaville brand, including his music and hotels, restaurants and products. A release from the governor’s office highlighted Buffett’s environmental advocacy, particularly his efforts to protect the manatees.

Bob Graham, who passed away in 2024, served Florida as a former U.S. Senator and governor for decades. Graham is remembered for his work on education, conservation and national security. His passion for education and civic engagement lives on through the Bob Graham Public Service Center at the University of Florida.

Buddy McKay, who passed away in 2024, served as governor of the state after Lawton Chile’s death in 1998. He also represented Floridians in the state legislature and as a member of the US Congress. After finishing his political career, President Bill Clinton appointed him as a special envoy for America and traveled to dozens of countries.

Lincoln Diaz Barato, who passed away this year, was a lawyer and politician who represented South Florida for several years. His family, a Cuban immigrant, fled to Florida, where he wrote important legislations regarding US relations with Cuba. He was also known for his defense of communism.

John Thrasher, who passed away this year, was a lawyer and Florida politician who served in the military during the Vietnam War. He represented citizens in both meeting rooms of the Florida State Legislature and chaired the Florida Republican Party. After retiring from politics, Thrasher was appointed president of Florida State University.

“We are proud to recognize the legacy of these great Floridians,” DeSantis said in a statement. “Our state is better for their contributions. I’m proud that they’ve invited Florida to their home. They each have won the honor of being awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom.”
