TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – My Safe Florida Home is a popular grant program that helps homeowners cut their property insurance costs and started applying Monday morning.

The Florida Legislature has allocated $280,000 to fund the program.

This year, the program’s focus will be on low-income homeowners.

The program will help Florida residents with free wind stump testing and grants of up to $10,000, provide storm-related upgrades to their homes and qualify for property insurance discounts.

Property covered by this program includes single-family homes, detached home properties, or townhomes.

Residents must live in their homes and are granted a Homestead exemption.

To qualify for the grant, residents must meet the following requirements:

Applications for building permits for the initial construction of a home must be made by January 1, 2008. Homeowners must provide the name and license number of the contractor of their choice
Run the mitigation project. Homeowners must agree to make their home available for final inspection once the project is complete. Homeowners must agree to provide the program with all information they receive from the homeowner’s insurance company that identifies discounts they have achieved for improvements funded through the program.

Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis in the following groups.

Starting on August 4th: Low-income people over 60 years old September 1st to 60 years old: Moderate income Homeowners over 60 years old August 18th: Low-income people over 15th
