When citizen understanding is more important than ever, Florida State University’s Institute for Governance and Civic Studies (IGC) is leading the indictment to promote civic education and freedom through research and education. Founded in 2023 through state law, the institute builds on the belief that freedom is America’s lifeline and only thriving if citizens understand the ideas to maintain it.

The IGC’s mission is to promote constitutional, economic, conscience and education freedom through strict academic programs and public events promoting civil discourse, and data-driven research. That initiative includes creating a new interdisciplinary degree in civil and liberal studies that provides four freedom-focused focus to prepare students for citizenship and professional careers.

A recent poll conducted by the IGC revealed that Americans aged 18-24 years old are not willing to engage beyond political differences compared to older adults. Another recent IGC opinion shows how polarization creeps into our most intimate relationships, with many now refusing to date people with opposing political views. The IGC aims to reverse this growing intolerance by providing students with knowledge and skills, respectfulness and meaningful involvement in civic life, in order to understand American founding principles and learn how to attract people with conflicting views.

The Institute also looked into public opinion surrounding the US Supreme Court decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor. In a national survey, the IGC found that 61% of respondents support parents opt-out when lessons focused on topics that contradict religious beliefs. The data also revealed that public concerns focused specifically on younger students. 53% support the ban and deletion of transgender-themed books from elementary schools, compared to just 40% in high schools. Interestingly, when asked whether such books should be removed from the classroom from the library, the distinction was little significant. The results also discovered large disparities between parents and non-parents, especially Democrats, and parents are more supportive of efforts to maintain such material from elementary school.

Through its research and polls, innovative education and dynamic public engagement, IGC has emerged as a national leader in civic renewal and educational excellence. It aims to become the country’s premier policy research institute to create the next generation of effective citizens and responsible leaders.
